Search for data recovery and you’ll find companies advertising 95%, 98%, even 99% success rates. Those figures deserve a closer look before you rely on them, because how a company calculates its rate matters more than the number itself.

How Success Rates Get Inflated

The simplest way to maintain a high success rate is to decline difficult cases. A company can turn away every drive that’s been opened, every one with platter damage, and every one that’s already been through two other shops — then report the rate on what remains. The figure is accurate in a narrow sense and tells you very little about your own situation.

Definitions matter just as much. If recovering a single readable file counts as a success, nearly every case qualifies. We consider a recovery successful when you get back essentially everything you were after. If we fall short of that, we show you what we retrieved and let you decide before any payment is due.

We don’t publish a success rate, and we’d encourage you to ask hard questions of any company that does.

What Actually Determines Your Odds

The type of device. Mechanical hard drives are the best understood and generally the most recoverable — most failures trace back to firmware corruption, a failed read/write head, or a damaged circuit board, all of which have established repair paths. SSDs are more difficult. There are no moving parts to inspect, controller support varies widely between manufacturers, and wear-leveling distributes data in ways that complicate reconstruction. Flash drives and memory cards fall somewhere between the two.

The nature of the failure. A drive that simply won’t respond often has a firmware issue, and when those are resolved you typically get everything back with the original folder structure intact. A drive that was dropped while running is a different matter — if the heads contacted the platters, that damage is permanent. The same drive model can carry very different odds depending on how it failed.

Prior recovery attempts. This is the factor most people aren’t aware of, and it’s the one that costs them the most. Every power-on of a drive with a crashed head risks spreading the damage further. Opening a drive outside a cleanroom introduces contamination onto surfaces where a single particle is a serious obstacle. A device that comes to us first has meaningfully better odds than the same device after several well-intentioned attempts.

RAID configuration. A redundant array can survive the loss of a member, which works in your favor. A RAID 0, however, requires every drive to be recovered before anything can be reconstructed — making it harder than a single drive, not easier.

Two Things That Improve Your Chances

Stop powering the device on. If a drive is clicking, making unusual noise, or failing to appear in your system, each additional attempt puts your data at further risk. Disconnect it and have it evaluated.

Don’t open it. The tutorials suggesting you swap a circuit board or reposition the heads yourself are aimed at a narrower set of problems than most people have. Cleanroom environments exist for a reason, and platter contamination cannot be reversed.
